December 13, 1997
The Liberty won their second straight game on Saturday, December 13th beating the Bulls 29-15. After falling behind 7-3 during the opening foul shots, the Liberty stormed back behind their stifling defense. Here's the boxscore.
December 16, 1997
In a devasting offensive performance, the Liberty dominated the Lakers on December 16th by the score of 37-8. The team is now undefeated through three games. They are looking to make it four straight this Saturday before they take three weeks off for the holidays.
December 20, 1997
1997 ended anticlimactically, as the Liberty won their fourth straight game when the Knicks forfeited. The Liberty are tied for first with their 4-0 record. The Spurs are also 4-0 and both teams are looking forward to their February 2nd match up.
January 10, 1998
1998 started with a offensive explosion worthy of Times Square on New Year's Eve as the Liberty won their 5th straight game 50-20 over the third place Hawks. After making 7 out of their opening 12 foul shots, the points just kept coming. All six Liberty players scored at least one basket in the well balanced attack which was highlighted by some superb passing. By the end of the first quarter, the Liberty led 25-5 and everything else was just a formality.
January 24, 1998
The Liberty remained undefeated as they coasted over the Magic on January 24th, 39-7. The Liberty defense was superb holding the Magic without a field goal until the last minute of the game. The victory sets up the climactic struggle with the equally undefeated Spurs on Monday February 2nd.
February 2, 1998
The Liberty suffered their first defeat of the season, falling to the Spurs 29-19. The Liberty led for much of the first half but were unable to mount a sustained offense and put the Spurs away. The Spurs went on a run late in the second quarter that bridged the halftime break and put the game out of reach.
February 21, 1998
The Liberty got back on the winning track with a 32-22 victory over the Bulls. The Bulls had the early lead based on an 8-5 foul shot edge but the Liberty slowly fought back taking the lead for good late in the 1st quarter. From there they kept pulling away and led by as many as 14 points before coasting to the 10 point victory.
February 24, 1998
A stifling defensive effort helped the Liberty edge the Suns 27 - 21 on Tuesday night. After falling behind 16-12 during the second quarter, the Liberty defense held the Suns to five points the rest of the way.
The win raises the Liberty record to 8 wins and one loss. They are now tied for first with the Spurs who lost to the Suns earlier in the week.
February 28, 1998
The Liberty finished the regular season with an offensive explosion as they triumphed over the Lakers 48-12. After a tight first quarter that found the Liberty clinging to a three point lead, the Liberty offense broke out to a 15 point halftime bulge and were never headed.
The win gave the Liberty a 9-1 record and clinched a share of first place in the regular season standings.
March 9, 1998
The Liberty won their quarterfinal matchup with the Knicks in a convincing 57-11 rout. The Knicks took an early 6-4 lead but then the Liberty put it all together. Tight defense and a ferocious fast break led to 28 unanswered points and a 32-6 lead. The 57 points and 46 point margin were both season highs for the team.
The win advanced the Liberty to the semifinals where they will meet the Suns. In two prior matchups, the Liberty prevailed 23-10 and 27-21.
March 14, 1998
In an exciting semifinal matchup, the Liberty ousted the Suns 26-13 setting up a meeting in the finals with the Spurs. The Liberty found themselves behind 5-3 after the opening foul shots but scored a layup off the opening tip to tie the score and never trailed again. The game remained close throughout the first half as neither team could generate much offense. The Liberty finally got their offense untracked late in the the third quarter to open up a 7 point lead with one period to play. They steadily pulled away in the 4th period to forge the final 13 point margin.
