Liberty Defeat Spurs 52 - 37
Welcome. This is the Home Page for the Liberty of the Edison Township Youth Basketball League, Minor Girls Division.
Before a packed gym at Herbert Hoover Middle School, the Liberty used a 21 point 4th quarter to pull away from the Spurs and win the Edison Township Youth Basketball championship 52-37. Trailing by one point after three quarters, the Liberty team-oriented offense went to work as five different players scored during the offensive explosion.
The Liberty jumped off to an early lead, 8-7, as they were 8 for 12 on their opening foul shots, their best performance ever in that crucial category. From there, they extended to an 8 point lead behind spectacular defense and excellent ball handling.
Free throw shooting was a key all game as the Liberty followed up their 8 for 12 performance in the opening free throws with 6 out of 7 during the game. The 14 out of 19 total, or 74% was by far the best in the league this season. However, nothing comes easy. During the 3rd quarter the Spurs fought back hitting several long outside shots including 2 three pointers to take a one point lead.
But the Liberty retained their composure in the face of the Spurs' half court press. As they solved the pressure defense, they continually found open players under the basket leading to the buckets that broke the game open.
The win avenged the Liberty's only regular season loss and brought their overall record to 12-1 following 9 regular season wins and a perfect 3-0 post season mark. The championship game win brought an exciting season to a close in the best way possible.
For the game every Liberty player made at least one basket and one free throw and had at least one rebound which further demonstrates the depth of the team effort.
The champions are now planning their team party. They want to thank their fans for their enthusiastic support all season long and especially in the championship game. Seeing the stands filled with Liberty supporters provided a great boost to the players' confidence.
